Facebook’s Blackout Reminded Us Of Something Important

Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp have been hit by an outage in the morning. As the blackout continues, connection and communication have been completely disrupted in multiple locations worldwide.

As individuals, the stress of losing our primary windows into the online social life is a grim reminder of how much we rely on these social networks to stay connected.

But what about those people or brands that rely on these apps to conduct business?

Over at Mrkt360, we have no audience to advertise to for our Facebook and Instagram campaigns. Our clients are nervous about how this will affect their results and their income, and rightfully so.

While there is nothing to be alarmed about in the long run, as connections will (hopefully) be back up and running relatively quickly, the worry is well-founded. This situation has pointed towards something important:

Entirely depending on social media is not the safest strategy possible.

While it is a great idea to utilize all of the advertising tools Facebook provides, the blackout has proven that it can’t be consistent all the time, as these things CAN happen.

Don’t get me wrong. Social media marketing through Facebook is still one of the most effective strategies out there, so be sure to use it when possible. But being 100% dependent on it to promote yourself or communicate with your clients can be a double-edged sword.

You can easily establish other communication channels. Create a website and use SEO strategies to rank high on search engines, optimize your Google My Business page to appear on Google Maps, and launch ad campaigns on YouTube and other social media you aren’t currently using.

The point is to diversify your options. Have multiple pillars holding you and your business up. That way, when one crumbles, the rest are still there.

If that isn’t an option for you right now, don’t worry! You’re going to be fine once this blackout passes, but be sure to diversify as soon as possible.
